Texas Book Festival

Our class has been invited to introduce Rob Scotton and his book Splat the Cat at the Texas Book Festival held in Austin on Sunday, October 28 from 1:00-1:30pm.  Arrival time at the event will be 12:30pm.
Your child is not required to attend, but we would love to have as many kids from the class as possible!  Mrs. Leslie Long is our contact person for the event (she's been involved with the event for 11 years!).

More information:
*Student clothing - In the past, students have worn their school t-shirts, nice school clothes or dressed up as a character / theme from the book.  (For example, the students who introduced Hank The Cow Dog dressed up as cowgirls / cowboys.  I've also seen classes make crazy hats and masks.)

*Encourage others at the school to come and watch the students introduce the author.  Bring cameras!

*Students should arrive 30 min. prior to the scheduled introduction time.  Please make sure you check in with the reading tent volunteers when you arrive. Make sure you allow plenty of time for parking and locating the tent. The Festival is very big and it takes some time to park and walk - especially if you haven't attended before.

*The TBF schedule is posted k on the Texas Book Festival website at http://www.texasbookfestival.org!  Check it out!  There are so many fun things to do for adults and kids.

*Author bios are posted on the TBF website at http://www.texasbookfestival.org/Authors.php
*The TBF Festival Grounds Map (showing where the tents are located) and Parking Map are posted on the TBF website under Festival Details - "How To Attend".  Note – the Children's Read Me a Story is located on Colorado between 12th and 13th St. http://www.texasbookfestival.org/Getting_There.php

*You can park in any of the free parking lots set up for the Festival:
  • Granger Parking Garage, 12th Street & Guadalupe (west of Capitol)
  • Capitol Visitor Garage, 12th Street & Trinity
  • State Lots 8 and 11, W. 15th Street & Colorado
  • State Garage A, E. 14th Street & San Jacinto
  • State Garage F, E. 13th Street & San Jacinto
  • State Lot 15, 9th Street & Colorado
*The tent will have a microphone and small stage. Please have students practice their introduction by using inflection, speaking slowly and with strong voice projection.  Practicing with a microphone will help students with voice projection.  We want to make sure we hear them!

*The author introduction is meant to be done for kids by kids. The intro should be less than 5 min and contain some biographical information about the author (book information, interesting things in their life, etc based on the author bio or other resources).

*After the students introduce the author - they can have a seat and enjoy the presentation.

*After the presentation - the students can escort the author to the book signing tent to have their books autographed.  The volunteer in charge of the children's signing tent is planning to have space set aside for the student introducers in the signing line so that they can get their books signed first.  The students will be able to get in the special VIP line with their badge. Parents can buy books at the Barnes and Noble sales tent (the children's books are located in the children's signing tent).  To avoid long lines, it is encouraged that you buy books before the presentation in the tent.   **Don't forget to bring your class book to have it signed!  Also if the author or illustrator should draw anything on the large tablet, don't forget to ask for it for your class (and get the author / illustrator to autograph it).

*Mrs. Long's cell phone number is 512.925.2653 if you get lost or need something the day of the festival.
